TALKING TO YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT YOUR DIVORCE Each year an estimated 240,000 children in the UK experience the separation of their parents. Overall, more than one in three children will see their parents split up before they reach their 16th birthday. Tips on what to say to your children: • While Mum and Dad’s feelings for each other have changed, we will never stop loving you • What has happened between Mum and Dad is not your fault • We will always be your Mum and Dad • Divorce is a grown-up problem between Mum and Dad How do you tell your children about your divorce or separation? • If possible, both parents, should be present. If this will create tensions, have separate discussions • Discuss what you will say beforehand • Keep discussions straightforward and age-appropriate • Children sometimes feel responsible when their parents split up. Re-assure them the split has nothing to do with them and they cannot change things • Let your children know how life will change, including concerns such as how they will see each parent and where they will live. If they have questions you cannot answer, reassure them you are both working out the details For information about divorce or separation please contact Julie Wain on 01785 211411 or Shani Carr on 01889 583871 22 December 2009 Disclaimer The contents of this article are for the purposes of general awareness only.
