Safe Disposal of Electrical Equipment:  WEEE Regulations - 7 May 2008

A recent survey has found that small and medium sized businesses remain unaware of the 2006 Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations.

These Regulations set out environmental responsibilities for firms needing to dispose of obsolete electrical and electronic equipment. With the burden, however, does come a potential benefit. Disposal of such equipment can be expensive but these Regulations can remove that expense.

The WEEE Regulations were introduced in January 2007 with a view to reducing the amount of electrical waste going to landfill. So for equipment purchased since August 2005 the Regulations now put responsibility for waste disposal on the producers. Producers have to join a “Producer Compliance Scheme” and take responsibility for the treatment, collection and recycling of any waste electronic equipment which they have produced since August 2005.

Your Company can therefore return equipment which has become obsolete to the producer meaning that you no longer need to pay to send the electrical waste to landfill.

WEEE will relate to your business and can enhance your green credentials!
